Halloween Candy Review: Gummy Ear Wax

ear_wax_candy_1Throughout the month I will be reviewing unusually creepy Halloween candy. Anyone can give out the usual M&M, Snickers, Milky Way, Twix mix. Stand out by giving a unique treat that will both repulse and excite the kids in your neighborhood.

Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you, Gummy Ear Wax! Nothing like a little ear wax to finish off a fine meal. These candies come in a white package bearing a picture of an ear and proudly stating in ear wax yellow ‘Gummy Ear Wax’. The bag alone is enough to turn the stomachs of many but, chances are, the kids in your neighborhood are tough. A little gummy ear wax is not enough to phase them. Make sure they take a closer look at the gummies. They are a little cloudy, all irregular shapes and the rough texture definitely resembles ear wax.
Go ahead and pop one in your mouth! What’s it like? Well, a little tough and chewy at the same time. Surprisingly, ear wax tastes like lemon! Who knew? So, while the texture may gross some people out, the flavor is surprisingly inviting. Get the neighborhood talking this Halloween by handing out bags of ear wax!

A Peek at my Halloween Decorations

I spent the better part of the day decorating for Halloween. Since my entire blog is devoted to this wonderful time of the year, I figured you might like to see what Halloween decorations I have. So, without further ado, here are some photos of my decor.

Spooky Lighted Lace Curtain. Hang this up in your window to set a spooky scene. I’ve also hung it on doors and mirrors to create a similarly eerie effect.

Haunted House Night Light. I like to put this in the guest bathroom or bedroom. It’s always a fun way to get your guests in the mood for Halloween!

Halloween Bathroom Collection. Again, stick this in your guest bathroom. If your guests and family are not in the mood for Halloween, well you just gave them no choice! Plus, kids seem to love when the bathroom is decorated for holidays. I’m not sure why, but it is true. I suppose it is also a good way to get your kids to use the bathroom more often.

Witch Shelf Sitter. Not everything has to be creepy! Add a little bit of cute to your Halloween decor (so as to not scare your kids too much) with this plush witch.

Halloween Taper Candles. Give the kids a reason to sit around your dinner table again! They will be eerily drawn to the flickering orange candles haunting the table, and then you can ask them how their day was while you have their attention.

Fantastic Halloween Adventure: Scooby-Doo and the Witch’s Ghost

thCAEK0OUXThe next stop on our Halloween tour: Scooby-Doo and the Witch’s Ghost! This animated movie came straight to DVD in 1999. Like most Scooby-Doo movies, this one revolves around a mystery. In this case, there is a witch’s ghost tormenting the citizens of Oakhaven, a sleepy little town where famed Horror writer Ben Ravencroft goes to write his books. Ben Ravencroft runs into Scooby and the gang after they solve a mystery at a local history museum.
Once Scooby, Shaggy, Velma, Daphne and Fred arrive in Oak Haven, they immediately begin to investigate the suspicious behavior of the mayor. The gang is skeptical about the Witch’s ghost being real , but once they see it for themselves will they believe in ghosts? Join the spooky adventurers as they try to solve the mystery of the Witch’s ghost!

Picturesque Oakhaven! I’m ready for Fall… and food!

Why it is a fantastic Adventure: This movie is one that I view every October to get me into the Halloween and Fall spirit. The town of Oak Haven has a picturesque Massachusetts Fall setting: brown leaves, barren trees, a small Main Street where everyone knows everyone, and even a re-creation of a Puritan village. If you live in parts of the world where the weather doesn’t change much and Fall doesn’t really happen, this is a great way to get yourself and the kids in the proper Fall mindset.
Along the way, the gang meet a group of Gothic witches who are in the rock band, The Hex Girls. This trio provides a few songs in the movie (which are actually pretty good) and help keep the kids entertained through the somewhat plodding mystery story.
Scooby-Doo provides the majority of the movie’s laughs, whether he is scarfing down a gigantic sandwich, begging for Scooby Snacks, or trying to churn butter in the Puritan village. He also provides crucial entertainment value in a story that is somewhat dark for a kids’ Halloween adventure.
On that point, the ghost in this movie is real. She is not someone dressed up in a costume to be de-masked at the end. She has a real thirst for revenge and will do anything to get her way. She brings pumpkins to life and turns them into evil jack-o’-lanterns that try to eat Scooby and the gang.

The plot deals with witches, Wiccans and warlocks, and provides a safe introduction to the topic of real life witches- Wiccans -that you can elaborate on later if you so desire.
The mystery plot is a lot of fun and will keep your kids guessing until the end, especially since the witch turns out to be real (but who was behind the other part of the mystery, and why was the mayor being so suspicious?). There are plenty of eerie locations to keep up the Halloween vibe: abandoned mills, forests full of dead trees, a cabin shrouded in an eerie fog.

Overall, Scooby-Doo and the Witch’s Ghost is a great atmosphere setting movie with a fun mystery and a few teachable moments and imagination igniting ideas for your kids. Watch and get ready for Halloween!

Fantastic Halloween Adventure: Disney’s The Legend of Sleepy Hollow

legendofsleepyhollowOne of my best childhood memories of Halloween is sitting around the TV turning on the Disney Channel and watching The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. For those who don’t know the story, it basically involves a very superstitious and easily scared school teacher, Mr. Ichabod Crane, being told a spooky story of a headless horsemen by the town prankster. When Ichabod makes his way home after the gathering, he is chased down by this headless horsemen and never heard from again.

This story appeals to such a broad audience because we all love a good unsolved mystery. Kids enjoy it because it is spooky, scary and a stern reminder not to run off alone!

The easily frightened Ichabod Crane
The easily frightened Ichabod Crane

The animation may leave younger kids a bit disappointed as it is not CGI and is actually hand drawn (oh, the horror)! However, they will quickly forget that little tidbit as they are sucked into the world of Sleepy Hollow. The daytime settings are pleasant to look at, which gives you a nice secure feeling. Hold on to that feeling. You’re going to need it.
When night falls on Sleepy Hollow the quiet, melodic town turns into a foreboding maze of dark forests, dimly lit cabins and dark, unlit paths. Of course, this is the part that is most appealing to kids and adults on Halloween night. If you talk to your kids and explain tot hem that the dark is not scary, and that the headless horsemen is not, in fact, real, they will not be frightened and will be able to enjoy the story for what it is.

The sense of fear and adventure stirs something primal in all of us, which is why this story and this cartoon version of it, continues to enthrall us all these years later.
Sit down and put this family friendly telling of the Legend of Sleepy Hollow in your DVD player!

What’s Your Favorite Part of Halloween?

shutterstock_70173520Living in Southern California my entire life, I can say I’ve never experienced a true Fall Halloween. Most of my Halloween memories come on hot nights staying out late trick or treating. We would usually go with a few kids from the street and all make our way around the entire neighborhood, covering parts that we had never been to before and haven’t been since. Halloween night was that one magical time when you could be guided by your parents to the farthest reaches of the neighborhood. What lies around the next corner? How many porch lights are on on this street? The excitement that comes with roaming round your neighborhood, knocking on doors and getting free candy is a rush that is unmatched with anything else in life. It is the greatest sense of adventure any kid can have.

Now that I can no longer trick or treat myself, decorating is my favorite part of Halloween. I enjoy making a home as frighteningly fun as possible. It’s always great to add to a kids’ Halloween night adventure by providing a memorable, spooky setting in which to trick or treat.

As I said earlier, living in Southern California my entire life, I’ve always longed for the picturesque Halloween atmosphere: Brown trees, falling leaves, Halloween carnivals and pumpkin patches. This is why another one of my favorite parts of Halloween is watching as many Halloween related movies and TV shows as possible. There’s something special about Halloween episodes of TV shows or movies taking place on a chilly Halloween night. I find the atmosphere enthralling and inspiring, which is why I primarily like to write Halloween stories. I get to live in Halloween land all year long!

Now I ask you, fellow Halloween fan. What is your favorite part of Halloween?

Halloween Candy Review: Oozing Eyeballs!

Throughout the month I will be reviewing unusually creepy Halloween candy. Anyone can give out the usual M&M, Snickers, Milky Way, Twix mix. Stand out by giving a unique treat that will both repulse and excite the kids in your neighborhood.

AAAADIqMLOQAAAAAAdnpKAToday’s Halloween candy review is for Oozing Eyeballs!
The packaging stands out as somewhat sickening. I mean who really wants to eat an eyeball? Kids, do! Of course, they will be grossed out for a few minutes by looking at the picture on the wrapper, but that is all part of the excitement and adventure of Halloween night!
7Once you get the package open, however, there is a bit of a disappointment factor. The artwork on the outside does not resemble the product inside. It is simply a plain white marshmallow puff filled with a flavored candy gel inside. No designs on the marshmallow themselves, just plain white. However, just the idea of eating an eyeball is sickening enough that most will hesitate to pop it in their mouths. The taste is a squishy, gooey sensation that would probably be a lot like eating a real eyeball with sugar poured all over it.
If you’ve ever had Gushers fruit snacks, the taste and gooeyness is similar.

The candy comes in multiple flavors, and is available from Oriental Trading.

What’s more fun than making things with your kids? Well, okay, there’s that. But, trust, me, this will be fun! Halloween Ghost Jugs. Everyone has milk cartons, right? This has to be one of the easiest and effective crafts I have seen. All you need to do is cut the bottom out of the jug, use a sharpie to draw a face and stick them on top of a strand of lights for an eerie ghost-like effect.
